For I have been waiting for those I could give a mantle to says the Lord, who could be those who stand for legacy in this state…. .you are going to be known as a Philadelphia state and there is going to be such unity among the believers and the Lord says, I am anointing and appointing this state particularly to shift for the next election and the Lord says this next election is key for California for I desire to bless this state says the Lord. I love this state and I desire to shift it but the Lord says you are at a ‘tipping point’… August 2010 Dr. Cindy Jacobs

Dawning of a New Day – 8 Day Prayer Guide
DAWNING OF A NEW DAY
And darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. Genesis 1:2-3
Many prophetic voices agree that 2012 is a tipping point year and others have said that by the end of March the course for our nation could be set regarding our election outcome. Most weigh the tipping point in perspective of the natural circumstances which are effecting the nation based on the economy, gas prices, unemployment, global currency and the 2012 elections. I understand those circumstances are very real, however I also believe if we continue to seek the Lord with humble hearts turning from our wicked ways God will hear our prayers and tip the bowls to turn a nation back to His ways. Let us believe and agree that with God all things are possible!
As I sought the Lord I heard the words “The Dawning of a New Day,” and in response I’m inviting you to join us in prayer to declare and demonstrate the new day dawning over our state and our nation.
We begin at midnight on March 4th praying for one hour until 1am. The second night we’ll pray from 1am-2am and continue over the course of 8 days until we have awakened from our slumber to see the dawning of the new day. Prophetically we’ll be demonstrating the desired outcome of our decree as we move forward into the Dawning of a New Day as outlined below. Please join us March 4- March 12th. Daily scripture verses will be sent out for prayer alignment and agreement.
Awakening The Dawning of the New Day
Sunday March 4th midnight to 1 am
Monday March 5th 1-2am
Tuesday March 6th 2-3am
Wednesday March 7th 3-4am
Thursday march 8th 4-5am
Friday March 9th 5-6am
Saturday March 10th 6-7am
Sunday March 11th 7-8am
Monday March 12th would be the 8th day which correlates with the number of new beginnings and 12 is the number of government. On this day we declare the dawning and breaking forth of a new day upon California and upon our nation. Let us arise to the call.
Know that darkness is merely the absence of light. You can be the small candle that defeats the vast darkness. - Jonathan Lockwood Huie

During the call Audrey Pannier, the Stanislaus County Representative, will share vital prayer information then lead us in prayer.
Declare with us: We are one in the spirit, we are one in the Lord. We declare that we have been redeemed and made one through the blood of Jesus Christ. We agree California will fulfill her God ordained destiny. We stand together in prayer, linking county to county in covenant alignment, to see God’s kingdom come and His will be done on earth – in California – as it is in heaven. Amen
History and Facts
Stanislaus County is located in the Central Valley of California, stretching from the Diablo Range on the west to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada on the east. The county is named for the Stanislaus River which is named after Chief Estanislao, a Yokut Indian who had been taken to Mission San Jose in 1821, baptized, educated and made a leader of the Yokuts residing at the Mission. His Christian name was Estanislao, or Stanislaus which is a Slavic name meaning “camp glory, stand of glory, becoming glorious, glorious government.”
Location, Geography, Demographics
Stanislaus County is often referred to as the Heart of the Central Valley, also known as the San Joaquin Valley. The counties surrounding Stanislaus clockwise from the north are San Joaquin, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Merced, Santa Clara and Alameda. On a clear day residents can see both the Diablo Mountain Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The San Joaquin River flows northward through the west side of the county creating a social and economic divide and a barrier to trade and travel. Interstate 5 on the West Side has provided access to Bay Area commuters to live in the Valley and buy affordable homes. Patterson and Newman have grown significantly as a result. The Stanislaus and Tuolumne Rivers flow from the mountains to the valley with the Stanislaus River being generally the northern border of the county except in the far northeast corner. Heavily traveled Interstate 5, the U.S. Canada to Mexico highway runs through the west side and federal highway 99 runs through the central portion.
Population has increased from 446,997 to 514,453 between 2000 and 2010, at least partially due to the increase in the number of Bay Area commuters. The 2010 Census gave the following demographic data: 65.6% white, 41.9% Hispanic or Latino of any race. Other groups include African-America, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander. A significant population of Portuguese from the Azores, Christian Assyrians from Iran, and Punjabis from India also reside here. The county seat is Modesto, a city of about 201,165. Turlock is the second largest city with 68,549. The other incorporated cities are Ceres, Hughson, Newman, Oakdale, Patterson, Riverbank, and Waterford. There are numerous census-designated and unincorporated communities as well. The poverty level is 16.4% compared with 13.7% nationally.
Important Root Issues for Prayer
The county’s earliest history reveals irreverence and mocking even in the presence of intense spiritual pursuits which included occult activities and drugs during the era of the natives. The Spanish were religious, exploitative and sometimes abusive although one forgiving priest was able to get Estanislao pardoned in the atmosphere of his return and repentance, apparently short-lived as it was. That leaves a small root of forgiveness.
The Mexicans were controlling, mean-spirited and sometimes brutal. They brought in historical roots of brutality from their history in Mexico during their war of independence from Spain. They were religious and political, and unforgiving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_War_of_Independence
This root structure grew and manifested during the founding of Modesto. Lawlessness, racism, bitterness, divisions religious spirits, trauma of betrayal and soul wounds are still felt in some neighborhoods today. The religious spirit makes itself more important than the relationship and is territorial, as in the walls of separation dictating where certain ethnic groups could live in Modesto and Turlock. Pride also drove a wedge between the two largest cities over the state’s choice of the site for the university.
Paradise Valley and Stand of Glory, Camp Glory, and Glorious Government are wonderful titles to be ascribed to our county and I believe they reflect the “manifest destiny” of the area. Glory represents God’s presence. Paradise refers to heaven on earth, a holy place. We haven’t seen it yet but by faith we are praying, working for it, and prophesying it.
Prayer Points
1. Pray that we would become the cluster from which the new wine comes and that we would be new wineskins to receive it as we forgive and allow God to wash away the debris and bring reconciliation so that we would not be confined to a spiritual prison. Pray that God’s presence would not be hindered from having its full release in our personal lives and the lives of all the believers.
2. Pray that we would obtain and use the keys wisely and well to unlock and lock, to bind and loose and use the authority God want us to have effectively according to the knowledge of His ways. (Turlock he town of Keyes is just north of Turlock on the way to Modesto.)
3. Pray that we would edify, exhort, comfort, establish, build and impart grace, blessing and peace toward the Body of Christ in this county and make His praise glorious.
4. Pray that Jesus would become the chief cornerstone, and that we would not stumble or be offended at Him and what He requires of us in order for the prophetic purpose to be fulfilled. We want to stand for the glory of the Lord in the beauty of holiness and the power of covenantal agreement.
5. Pray for the River of God to flow freely and cause everything to grow according to the ways and purposes of God. Pray that God would provide sufficient precipitation for the crops that feed the world.
6. Pray for the Kingdom of God to come and His perfect will to be done so that we would be worthy of our high calling and manifest the glorious destiny that God has for us.
7. Pray that our church and government leaders would become a righteous stand of glory and have an anointing for bringing forth a glorious government according to the ways and purposes of the Lord.

FACTS & DEMOGRAPHICS
Mariposa County is nestled in the foothills and mountains in the central Sierras.
Mariposa is the home of and county seat for, Yosemite Nat’l Park. (Yosemite hosts over 4 million people a year from around the world.) The town of Mariposa is the official south end of the Mother Lode of the California Gold Fields. It is the only county in the state without a city or stop light. The total population is 18,000 people with a density population of only 6 per square mile. The largest city (village) & county seat is Mariposa with a population of 1,800 people. Politically it is strongly Republican … 62% of the population voted for Prop 8.
THE 2010 CENSUS REPORTS
Two same sex couples live in Mariposa The population is 89% white, 7+ % Hispanic, 2% Indian, 2% everything else. Median income family $42,655.00 … Per capita income $18,000.00 15% of population below the poverty line The Mariposa schools are decreasing in students causing financial crisis and closing of schools. The Mariposa school teachers tend to be a higher percentage of Christians (conservative) than normal. The Mariposa school environment is much better than most … less drugs, no gangs, more 4-H & scouts, etc. (More family involvement) Home-schooling per capita is very high here. There is a strong church presence here .. but mostly “outer court” (Non charismatic) (See comments under “The Nazareth syndrome” below)
EMPLOYMENT/ECONOMY
Tourism, Gov’t (Park Service & Forest Service, Cal Fire, Cal Trans, Mariposa county, schools, etc.) & agriculture.
SOME SPIRITUAL ROOTS
Free Masonry Stronghold (Blue Lodge Headquarters here) Poverty and lack abounds as Mariposa sits on the Mother Lode of Gold, Strong religious spirit … anti-Holy Ghost/Pentecostal churches.
Col Fremont owned the entire area during the beginning days, 1848 thru 1860s: “Rancho de Indians ~ Witchcraft & idolatry (As is true throughout the state.) Las Mariposas” the 44,000 acre Spanish Land Grant (Fremont was the conqueror of Calif .. first Governor, First senator, an officer and a gentleman, faithful and loving husband, honest, benevolent, devout Christian, wrote the first emancipation proclamation to the free the slaves, first Republican nominee for U.S. President.) The Regional “Feast of Fire Revival” exploded here. The prophetic act of The Yosemite Fire Falls … and highest concentration of high water falls in the world (Outpourings)
ELECTED OFFICIALS

WHY MARIPOSA COUNTY?
Mariposa County started out in 1850 as the largest and most important county in the state of California. This was due to two basic dynamics.
First, it was one of the original major gold camps on the Mother Lode. Keep in mind that in the late 1840’s and early 1850’s places like San Francisco and Los Angeles were just little tiny pueblos with very little significance to them. In those days the Mother Lode towns were where all the activity was. Boomtowns like Mariposa and Hornitos had populations of tens of thousands of people. It was their gold shipments and their necessity of supplies that originally built Sacramento and San Francisco into their greatness.
The second, and probably most significant, reason for Mariposa’s importance was John Fremont. Mariposa was his and Jessie’s home base during California’s first few years. The name Mariposa means “butterfly” in Spanish, which is symbolic for “new beginnings” or “transformation.” Mariposa is one of the original forty-niner gold mining camps of the California “Mother Lode” gold rush era. It is situated in the foothills of the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at the crossroads of state highways 49 and 140. The Mariposa mines were actually the south end of the Mother Lode. The Mother Lode began in Mariposa and ran 120 miles to the north. It is the home town of Yosemite National Park. Yosemite Valley and all of its waterfalls, plus the Mariposa Grove of Giant Redwoods are in the county. The town of Mariposa is less than 20 miles, the way the crow flies, from the western boundary of the park.
Contrary to what most people think about California living, today Mariposa County in its entirety is very remote and unpopulated. Even the town of Mariposa, which is the county seat, with a population of only about 1,700 people, has no stoplights. In fact, there are no stop lights in the entire county. Nor does the county, with a total population of about 18,000 souls, have any incorporated cities. There are no city police, city limits, or mayor because there is no official city in the county. There are only a few little towns in the county and they are all unincorporated. Like “the Old West,” the county sheriff is the local law, and a small Board of Supervisors manages the whole county with its few small towns.
Mother of Counties ~ originally the largest county in the world
Mariposa is named the “Mother of Counties.” Counting Mariposa itself, the original county included all or part of twelve counties. There were 11 other counties, or partial counties, birthed from Mariposa: (Apostolic/parental spirit) (Coincidence? Mariposa involves 12 counties (12 = apostolic government) and lies in the heart of the apostolic state that leads the world in launching international ministries)
The official county seal says “Mariposa, Mother of Counties.” In 1850, when California became a state, the original Mariposa County included one fifth of the state. Its original size is still the largest county in the world. It was larger than many eastern states. Parts of the present San Benito, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties as well as eight other entire counties were birthed from the original Mariposa County. Cities like Lancaster, Palmdale, Mojave, Santa Clarita, Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, Visalia, Merced, Oakhurst and Fresno are within the original Mariposa County borders.
It included the geographical center of California and is recorded as the largest county in world history. I believe it is of no coincidence that the county that represents the heart of California speaks of the apostolic.
Oldest courthouse in California: The Mariposa County Courthouse is the oldest operating courthouse in California, and some historians say west of the Mississippi River. It was constructed in 1854 and is still the active courthouse today with no plans for a new one.
Oldest newspaper in California: The Mariposa Gazette, Mariposa’s weekly newspaper, and only newspaper, is the oldest continually operating newspaper in the state.
The Western White House: General John Charles Fremont, “the Conqueror of California,” owned “Rancho de Las Mariposas,” a 44,000-acre Spanish land grant that he purchased just before gold was discovered in the region. Being an educated and highly experienced engineer, he quickly began operations. Fremont’s Mariposa home was called the “Western White House.” He was already celebrated as the catalyst in the Bear Flag Revolt and the one that, in cooperation with U.S. Navy Admiral Sloat, and then his replacement Admiral Stockton, negotiated the surrender of the Mexican army establishing California as American soil. During the gold rush days Fremont was appointed the first U.S. governor of the territory of California, plus the first elected senator for the state. In addition he was the American Republican Party’s first nominee for president. Abraham Lincoln stumped for him in the election of 1856, four years before Lincoln was elected in 1860. In those early days in California’s infancy, Fremont was one of the most influential and celebrated characters in the California arena, and that wherever he lived would be a political “ground zero.”
The Mother Lode is discovered in Mariposa: Fremont brought experienced Sonorans up from Mexico to mine the gold on his ranch in Mariposa. They were the first to find the quartz ledge that ran through the heart of gold country that became known as “The Mother Lode.” That was the beginning of quartz (hard rock) mining in California. The Mother Lode, as it refers to the California Gold Rush, is a vein of concentrated gold bearing quartz averaging a half mile wide and a hundred twenty miles long. Its southern end is Mariposa and its northern end is Sierraville northeast of Sacramento. It runs through the foothills, paralleling the high country, at an elevation of about fifteen hundred to three thousand feet.
The first million-dollar corporation in California: Mariposa Mining Company wasthe first million-dollar corporation in California. It was the result of a lease transaction from Fremont to a group of San Francisco bankers for the Mariposa Mine. Incidentally, the Mariposa Mine was discovered by Kit Carson while he was in Fremont’s employ.
America’s first authorized private mint
In 1850, near the base of Mt. Ophir, Mariposa County, John L. Moffat built the first private mint in the nation that produced government-approved coins. There were other concerns in the Mother Lode producing coins at the time but they were not official legal tender. This was a significant improvement over the inconvenience of measuring gold dust when you traded.3
The first Indian treaties in California: On March 19, 1851, at Camp Fremont near Mariposa Creek, the first Indian treaties with the United States Government were signed with six tribes. The treaties were later unratified by the government.
First land “Federal Park” preserved for future generations by a federal government
Mariposa’s Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias (redwoods), both in the present Mariposa County, is the first land in the world that was ever preserved by its government for future generations. Yosemite was originally a federal reserve, enacted by Congress and signed into law by President Lincoln during the Civil War and placed under the administrative jurisdiction of the State of California. In other words, it was Mariposa, California real estate, now known as Yosemite National Park, that has the distinction of being the first federally protected land in world history.
Yosemite, named “The Jewel of the National Parks,” was the first of God’s creation or handiwork to be preserved for all future generations to enjoy. It was not the first National Park, but Yosemite led the way. When the National Park Service was created, Yosemite was already protected by the United States government more than thirty years earlier.
SOME SPIRITUAL INSIGHTS & HISTORY
The prophetic symbolism of “The Yosemite Firefalls”: In 1871, only twenty-one years into statehood and thirty-five years before the fire fell at Azusa Street, man stood on Mariposa soil in the heart of California, near the banks of the Merced River, “the River of Mercy,” and, I might add, in the midst of His beauty and splendor of the high waterfalls, and prophetically called the fire down. Then in 1906, God answered that call and sent latter-day Pentecost to the whole world via Los Angeles (the City of Angels) to the south.
Cindy Jacobs and Marilyn Noorda:
In 1997, respected prophetess Cindy Jacobs of Generals International, with her California/west coast coordinator Marilyn Noorda, got out a map of California to pick the center of the state. As prophetic intercessors they were strategizing a prayer structure for California and planned a gathering of intercessors from all over California to meet at that center and prophesy and proclaim for the state. As they prayed and examined the map they both put their finger on Mariposa. However, due to some other circumstances, their inauguration meeting was moved to a community south of Mariposa.
I remember Marilyn telling me this story at our church when she attended one of our revival meetings back in 1997 or 1998. She said that she and Cindy had agreed that they should have prayed for the state from the Mariposa County Courthouse. Recently, when I contacted Marilyn about this book and asked for her prayers and input, she began to tell me that story again. When she began the story I finished it for her. She said “that’s right,” in surprise. I reminded her that she told me that story over ten years ago.
Her immediate reaction was that this book and its timing for California witnessed with her. She said “It is time, and someone has to write it,” and indicated that it should come from the heart of California. She also said that with the timing of the book, and because of the times in general, it was time to pray for California from the Mariposa County Courthouse.
That gathering took place recently in July of 2009. A group of intercessors hosted by Grace and me, and led by Marilyn, met at the courthouse and prayed and decreed over the Golden State. That same day we went to Camp Curry in Yosemite and did a prophetic re-enactment of the Yosemite Firefalls. The intercessors reiterated the call “Let the fire fall!” We also prayed over the Merced River as strategic head-waters of the California water issues. Lastly, we went up to Glacier Point where the Firefalls originated and prayed and blew the shofar and decreed over California “The fire is falling!”
The Feast of Fire Revival
It is imperative to note that as far as we know, besides Azusa Street itself, there has been no other move like it in the state, nor in any other western state. It was a very uncommon move of the Holy Spirit. It exploded in our little church of Mariposa Revival Center (at that time it was Sierra Faith Center), but was immediately joined by more than thirty other churches and ministries. Those other ministries represented cities in central California that were all much bigger than Mariposa. Those cities represented the counties of Stanislaus, Merced, Madera and Fresno, plus Mariposa. The combined population of the four other counties was about one and a half million souls. Yet the revival started in the woods of Mariposa.
The Nazareth syndrome
It is also interesting to note that although the revival was born in Mariposa, no other church in town would embrace it. In fact, most of them persecuted it and avoided it. We had to stand alone in the community as we were joined, and enthusiastically supported by the churches from neighboring counties. God had His way for Mariposa and the state, but He had to send the reinforcements in from the outside.
A word given by pastor John Pursell ~ Believer’s Church, Madera
Place: Feast of Fire Revival meeting ~ Mariposa County Fairgrounds ~ April 19, 1997
“There is coming a great move of God’s healing power to the Mariposa area. It will begin in the churches and flow out into the streets and eventually down the mountain into the valley floor. It will be the talk of the town in Mariposa. Many people who have fought against, or misunderstood the move of God will see that God is moving in His healing power. And they will not be able to deny the move of God any longer. There will be several different churches involved in this move, and just as the Feast of Fire Revival started here this stronger move of healing and miracles will begin here also.”

Praying for the State of California – Feb 20-27th
To accomplish this, we need to mobilize a well-informed army of impassioned voices and activists to bear up the nation in prayer.
The following is a reminder of the prayer gathering we are hosting here in the Napa Valley, for any and all who want to come together and call forth God’s covenant promises for California. Following that, is also a list of some of the different sites in California where worship and prayer gatherings will take place this next week. Feel free to pass these sites on to those you know in California so they can join in.
We hope you will join us next Thursday, February 23 at 7pm at The Rock Worship Center.
Prayer for the State of California
February 23, 2012 – 7pm * The Rock Worship Center
Vision: Advancing the Nation Toward Righteousness
On Monday, January 2, 2012, the United States Reformation Prayer Network, with Cindy Jacobs, launched its FastForward Campaign - a fasting and prayer initiative with the purpose of advancing our nation toward righteousness.
Our foundational scripture for this initiative is Nehemiah 6:15-16, which tells of the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem in 52 days. Likewise, we are engaging in a year-long intercessory campaign to rebuild the walls of righteousness around our own hearts, around each state and around the nation, and then move forward into our God-given destiny.
We want to see Godly leaders and laws put in place.
Where there is immorality we want to see Godly virtue.
Where there is corruption we want to see leadership above reproach.
We want to promote and sustain a Biblical worldview among the leaders of America and
establish a Republic that is built upon and perpetuates Biblical values.
To accomplish this, we need to mobilize a well-informed army of impassioned voices and
activists to bear up the nation in prayer, thus, the FastForward Campaign.
During 2012 we will PRAY State-by-State for our Nation.
Beginning February 20 – 26, 2012 the nation will be praying for the State of California.
As part of that week of prayer we will be hosting different worship and prayer gatherings throughout the state.
One of those gatherings will be in Napa on February 23, 2012 at 7p.m.
Please visit www.usrpn.org and/or www.rpnca.org for more info on the FastForward campaign and prayer points for praying for the State of California.

SUTTER COUNTY
Sutter County is a located along the Sacramento River in the Central Valley north of California’s state capital Sacramento. The California State Legislature incorporated Sutter County on 18 February 1850, which originally included parts of Colusa and Placer Counties. The current boundaries were established in 1857. The county seat is Yuba City.
History
Sutter County was one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood. Parts of the county were given to Placer County in 1852.
Sutter County is named after one of the state’s more engaging and complex historical personalities, and an agricultural visionary. John Agustus Sutter, a German native born to Swiss parents, was one of the first to recognize the Sacramento Valley for its potential as an agricultural empire, and his Hock Farm, established in 1841 on the Feather River just south of present-day Yuba City, was the site of the valley’s first large agricultural enterprise.
Sutter County is the birthplace (Yuba City, 1858) of John Joseph Montgomery, who was the first American to successfully pilot a heavier than air craft, 20 years before the Wright Brothers, and who held the first patent for an “aeroplane.”
In the 1890s Sutter County was one of the two prohibition counties in California; the other was Riverside County. Both outlawed saloons and sale or consumption of alcohol in public
Prior to1840, the land now known as Sutter County was the home of the Maidu Indians and under the control of the Mexican government. Members of various Spanish expeditions in search of mission sites, and fur trappers lured by the abundant wildlife, traveled through the county in 1841. John Sutter received a grant in 1841 from the Mexican government of about 50,000acres and named his settlement New Helvetia. He established a Hock farm near what is now Yuba City and by 1844 had nearly completed Sutter’s Fort. The United States seized control of California from Mexico in 1846 at the start of the Mexican War. Gold was discovered on the American river in 1848 by John Marshall, an employee of Sutter. This discovery eventually ended Sutter’s empire as thousands of gold seekers came to the area.
After the gold rush, the settlers developed the rich farmland and made use of the abundant water in Sutter County.
Several agricultural advancements were introduced in Sutter County:
In 1868 Edward Proper developed a strain of wheat which was known for its suitability to ship it over long distances.
In 1873, William and George Thompson developed the Thompson Seedless Grape, which is now the most widely planted table grape in the world.
In the 1880s two farmers, A.F. Abbott and Joseph Phillips, developed a strain of cling peach.
Today, Sutter County still has vast stretches of farmland, but now enjoys a diverse population and industry.
Sutter Buttes
Yuba City’s western horizon is dominated by the Sutter Buttes, renowned for being the “Smallest Mountain Range in the World.” The range is actually circular with a diameter of 10 miles and covers an area of about 75 square miles. The mountains are the remnants of a volcano that has been dormant for over a million years. South Butte, the highest peak is 2,117 feet above sea level. North Butte is 1,863 feet and West Butte is 1,685 feet above sea level.
Before modern levees and dams were built to contain the rivers, winter storms and spring run-off frequently turned the Sacramento Valley into an inland sea making the Sutter Buttes an island refuge for Indians, settlers and wildlife.
The Buttes have had many names over the years. The Maidu Indians called them “Histum Yani” which translates as, “Middle Mountains of the Valley” or “Spirit Mountain” … depending on the source. According to Maidu legend, after death, the spirits of their people rest in the Buttes. The Sutter Buttes of Northern California’s Sacramento Valley are where life began and where life ends. Playing a role in the traditional creation and afterlife stories of the Maidu and Wintun peoples, this small mountain range was a place of ritual for their ancestors, who once lived within view of the Buttes.
Arlene Ward, a member of the Mechoopda Maidu tribal council, says: “The Gold Rush and the events of the 1800s stripped us of our cultural identity and our resources. We lost who we were. Now in the 21st century, many people are taking up their identity as native peoples. The Sutter Buttes are significant to who we are and it may be that there are practices we want to revive and we will want to go to that power place — but it has to be there for us.”
The Maidu Indians who lived east of the Buttes called them Histum Yani, and the Wintun Indians, who lived to the west, knew them as Onolai-tol. Both names translate to “Middle Mountain.” Rising like an island in the center of the Sacramento Valley, the Sutter Buttes figure prominently in the creation stories of these two Native American tribes. The origin stories differ: sometimes the Sutter Buttes arose out of water or darkness or chaos, created by the falcon spirit animal. In other stories, the Buttes were where Earth Maker dwelled after having made the world.
But just as the Sutter Buttes have a place at the beginning of creation, they also play a vital role at the end of life. In many native traditions, the Buttes are a mysterious, powerful portal to the spirit world, a stopping point for the dead on their journey to the afterlife. In some traditions, the Buttes are so powerful land holy that stepping foot in them is forbidden except to healers and spiritual leaders.
Northern California native peoples, such as those belonging to the Maidu and Wintun nations, did not live within the Sutter Buttes but seasonally traveled to the foothills to gather acorns, hunt and perform rituals and ceremonies. Their home villages were along the Sacramento and Feather rivers, where the Buttes’ prominent peaks dominated the people’s spiritual and visual landscape
In the 1830s a malaria epidemic brought by European fur trappers killed an estimated two thirds of the area’s native population; later diseases such as smallpox and cholera killed even more. The California Gold Rush displaced ancestral villages when the establishment of towns pushed the few remaining Indians onto remote village sites. When California joined the United States in 1850, the state passed legislation allowing for Native Americas to be forced into “apprenticeships.” These events devastated what was once the densest population of native people in America. Finally, in 1862, many Sacramento Valley Indians were forcibly relocated to a reservation. Today, the closest Native American settlement is a Wintun Rancheria,” or tribal land, about 10 miles west of the Buttes.
Despite the devastation and displacement, the Sutter Buttes continued to be an important Gabriel Moraga, a Spaniard trying to locate possible mission sites, was the first European to see the Sutter Buttes in1806. Another Spaniard, Luis Arguello, led an expedition in 1817 to explore Northern California by water. He called the Buttes “Los Picachos” or the peaks. He also named the Feather River “El Rio de la Plumas”, because he saw many feathers of wild fowl floating on the water.
Other names for the Buttes were “Marysville Buttes”, “Sacramento Buttes”, and “Los Tres Picos.”They were finally named the “Sutter Buttes” in 1949.
Foundations
1849 John Sutter deeded to himself, Pierson B Reading, Samuel Brannan and Henry Cheever the land for a new town. In the same month, Brannan, Reading and Cheever laid out what would become the Town, and later, City of Yuba City.

Yuba City is known for its sizeable Sikh community
The Sikh population in the Yuba-Sutter Area has grown to be one of the largest in the United States and one of the largest Sikh populations outside of the Punjab state of India.
Each year on the first Sunday of November, Sikhs from the United States, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and throughout the world attend the Sikh parade in Yuba City, which commemorates the receipt by Sikhs of their Holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, in 1708. The 4.5-mile-long parade features floats and a procession of parade participants. The 2005 parade drew an estimated 56,000 people while the 2007 parade was estimated to draw between 75,000 to 85,000 people of both Sikh and non-Sikh background In 2008, an estimated 80,000 people came out for the event which is now considered one of the largest gatherings in Northern California

“Today, the availability of water, plus long, sunny growing seasons make Sutter County prime agricultural land. Over 93% of the County’s land is classified as “important farmland” making it one of the most intensively farmed counties in California. Agricultural products produced in Sutter County are exported throughout the world. The ten leading crops include: rice, beans, tomatoes, melons, alfalfa, hay, and tree crops of peaches, almonds, walnuts and plums. No one around here says ‘plums’ though. Yuba City is home to Sunsweet Growers Inc., the largest prune packing plant in the world, so we skip the middle stage and just call ‘em prunes.” From the article, Yuba City’s Agricultural Heritage at http://www.syix.com/yubacity/ycag.html
2012 Elections
On November 4, 2008, Sutter County voted 70.7 % for Proposition 8 which amended the California Constitution to ban same-sex marriages.
Sutter is a strongly Republican county in presidential and congressional elections. The last Democrat to win a majority in the county was Franklin Roosevelt in 1940. Sutter was part of California’s 2nd congressional district, which was held by Republican Wally Herger. Since the redistricting of California Sutter is now in California’s 3rdcongressional district. In the state legislature Sutter is presently in the 2ndAssembly district, which is held by Republican Jim Nielsen, however with the new redistricting maps Sutter has been redistricted into District 3.Republican Dan Logue presently over District 2 will be running for the assembly seat of District 3 in the 2012 election.
California’s New 3rd Congressional District
California’s New3rd Congressional District (CD3) is geographically vast, amazingly complex and overall intriguing. CD3 includes all or parts of Colusa, Glenn, Lake, Sacramento, Solano, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties and includes notable educational, air force bases, natural resources, water, agriculture, and transportation features.
For the new 3rd district map go to http://www.garamendi.org/cd3
This sprawling seat covers almost all of interior northern California with the main cities in the district being Chico, Redding, and Yuba City.
