Calaveras/Alpine, CALIFORNIA

Calaveras is one of California’s original 27 counties. In 1848 people came to this county for gold and over 9 million ounces of gold was mined from this land. The largest gold nugget found in the United States was mined at Morgan Mine weighing in at 214 lbs and 8 ounces. (1) Calaveras is a Spanish word that means skulls. The river was said to have been named by Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga when he found many skulls of Native Americans along its banks. He believed they had either died of famine or been killed in tribal conflicts over hunting and fishing grounds. In fact, the human remains were of the native Miwuk people killed by Spanish soldiers after they banded together to rise against Spanish missionaries. Estanislao, or Stanislaus was a Yokut Indian convert from Mission San Jose. The Stanislaus River and County are named after him. He escaped Mission San Jose and it is reported that he gathered together a small group of Miwuk men and with crude weapons they fought the Spanish soldiers that were coming after them. They were all killed. A Spanish explorer by the name of Gabriel Moraga found the skulls of the Indians and named the river Calaveras for the skulls. The county is named after the river. (5)

List Cities, Towns, Neighborhoods

The cities and towns in Calaveras County are Angels Camp, Arnold, Avery, Copperopolis, Dorrington, Forest Meadows, Glencoe, Mokelumne Hill, Mountain Ranch, Murphys, Rail Road Flat, Rancho Calaveras, San Andreas, Sheep Ranch, Vallecito, Valley Springs, Wallace and West Point.

Angel Camp, population 3000, is the only incorporated city and it is here in 1864, Mark Twain wrote his first successful short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.

Alpine County is the smallest county, by population, in California with a population of 1,175, all rural. There are no incorporated cities in the county and the county seat is Markleeville on the eastern side of the Sierras. It is located in the Sierra Nevada range between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. All of its highways, State Routes 4, 88 and 89 are Scenic Byways.

Location, Geography, Statistics, Unemployment

Located on the eastern border of California, Alpine County is surrounded by the following counties in clock-wise order from the north: Douglas County which  is in Nevada, Mono County, Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Amador County, and El Dorado County. It is accessible by State Routes 4, 88 and 89, all of which are typically closed in the winter at their summits, although Cal Trans tries to keep 88 open as much as possible. It is prone to avalanches.

Alpine County consists of 743.19 square miles, 99.39% of which is land that lies along the crest of the central Sierra Nevada, south of Lake Tahoe and north of Yosemite. Alpine County was created from parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Mono Counties in 1864 during a silver boom in Nevada. It was named due to its resemblance to the Swiss Alps. At its formation, the county had a population of about 11,000 with its county seat in Silver Mountain City. By 1868 however, the local silver mines had proven unfruitful, and the population fell to about 1,200. The county seat was moved to Markleeville in 1875.

The inaugural High Up Fest, a one day musical event that brings together the popular Reggae movement with rock and hip hop, will host a national line-up of musical acts at Kirkwood Mountain Resort on March 24.

Prayer points:

  • Let the high praises of God arise in Calaveras and Alpine County releasing atmospheric change over the state of California
  • May the joy of the Lord be the strength of those standing in the gates and high places of these counties
  • May these counties arise to be connectors of righteousness within the state and bringers of Good News
  • Lord we pull on the holy root in the land and call forth houses of prayer and worship in Alpine and Calaveras County
  • We pray for those who dwell in the land to seek righteousness renewing their minds and obedient to God’s Word

Psalm 19:7-11The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the [whole] person; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure and bright, enlightening the eyes. The [reverent] fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even than much fine gold; they are sweeter also than honey and drippings from the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is Your servant warned (reminded, illuminated, and instructed); and in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalm 119:72 The law from Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Psalm 119:127 Therefore I love Your commandments more than [resplendent] gold, yes, more than [perfectly] refined gold.

Exodus 20 THEN GOD spoke all these words:

2I am the Lord your God, Who has brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3You shall have no other gods before or besides Me.

4You shall not make yourself any graven image [to worship it] or any likeness of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

5You shall not bow down yourself to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me,

6But showing mercy and steadfast love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.

7You shall not use or repeat the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, lightly or frivolously, in false affirmations or profanely]; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.

8[Earnestly] remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy (withdrawn from common employment and dedicated to God).

9Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

10But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, your daughter, your manservant, your maidservant, your domestic animals, or the sojourner within your gates.

11For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it [set it apart for His purposes].

12Regard (treat with honor, due obedience, and courtesy) your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land the Lord your God gives you.

13You shall not commit murder.

14You shall not commit [a]adultery.

15You shall not steal.

16You shall not witness falsely against your neighbor.

17You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s

Make  plans to join us as Rhonda, Christine and Audrey share this important information.
